Perceptions From The Other Side of ADD
Positive Quotes
About ADD You'll be surprised at how many professionals and researchers are
challenging the disorder model of ADD and touting its positive attributes.
Readers' Stories
Positive ADD stories and thoughts from my readers.
Hunters,
Explorers and Dreamers... There are a lot of different ways people have looked at the
various traits of ADD, and there is plenty of overlapping with other designations like
dyslexia and creative, such as:
- Hunters
- Explorers
- Creative
- Gifted
- The Edison Trait: Dynamos, Discoverers and
Dreamers
- Lateral and Divergent Thinkers
- Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)
- Dyslexic
Overexcitabilities
Used to Predict Giftedness. The same
"overexcitabilities" which make up ADD are being used by researchers to identify
kids that may be gifted.
ADHD as a
Disorder of Adaptation. My summary of a
technical paper published in 1997 which validates many of Thom Hartmann's
"radical" ideas about ADDers being "Hunters in a Farmer's World."
The Problem With
CHADD and Accommodations CHADD is the most
important source of ADD information for parents, schools, and the government. But
they are highly biased towards the "brain defect" concept and refuse to
acknowledge more positive viewpoints held by respected professionals in the fields of ADD,
temperament and creativity. They're also partly funded by the makers of Ritalin.
CHADD's Fact
Sheet on Alternatives: A Critique Come
and see bias in action.
Researchers Study the Most
Dysfunctional ADDers, Resulting in Biased Views. Forget about the dire predictions
about jail and drug abuse and the high rate of learning disabilities among ADDers.
Studies are biased because only the most dysfunctional ADDers are studied and these ADDers
are more likely to experience cofactors such as dysfunctional families or brain defects.
Explorer
Traits (Beyond the Checklists...) These are some of the more common traits for
ADDers or "Explorers" I run across from my readers and from the former Explorer
mail list. You just might find out that you're not as unique as you think you
are.
