oakbr.gif (131993 bytes) In the spring of 1995, a crew of volunteers organized as the "Shelton Trails Association" extended Oak Valley Trail along Shelton Avenue for about half a mile, and picked up at least 50 bags of garbage. They also built a wooden bridge over a small stream using treated wood donated for the trail. The core group of volunteers included Mark Aldrich, Mark Roberts, John Marren, David Marro and Wally Slater.
Vivek's bridge2.bmp (810054 bytes) In 1996, a crew of scouts led by Vivek Bellore built this bridge on Oak Valley Trail over the inlet to Hope Lake. The approaches involved a lot of stonework.

walkway at Hope Lake 1.bmp (810054 bytes)

Joshua Liposky built this kiosk and a set of board walks at the Oak Valley trailhead on Hope Lake in 2001 as a Scout project. The kiosk has two displays of 40"W x 32"H.
Kiosk at PL.bmp (1440054 bytes) David Holden and Troop 101 erected this kiosk at the parking area on Shelton Avenue for the Dominick Trailhead and Oak Valley Trail access. The kiosk has two display windows 34" W x 36" H. This one has my favorite design for accessing the board and putting new info on it.

This kiosk and park bench at Gristmill Trail were constructed by Andrew Lautenschlager and about ten Scouts from Troop 28 in 2004. The kiosk has two large display windows, front and back. They also cleaned up that end of the trail. Materials were donated by Shelton Concrete and Stevenson Lumber in Monroe.

kiosk at Pine Lake.bmp (810054 bytes) This kiosk at the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path trailhead on Pine Lake was added by Steve Ng in 2004 as a Scout project. The kiosk has a display window of 22"W x 34"H.
The entrance to Nell's Rock Trail got a major facelift 2004-2005. Royce York and fellow scouts cleared out mountains of brush and installed a fence and gate as part of an Eagle Scout project to make this a substantial parking area.  The City responded by removing piles of concrete pipes, grading, and spreading asphalt millings and wood chips.
The Turkey Trot trailhead is now a lot easier to find thanks to a new kiosk, bridge and an asphalt millings base, courtesy of Scout Adam Cleri and his helpers in 2005.  This is located on Constitution Blvd across the street from the middle school.
The junction of Oak Valley and Dominick Trail is easier to follow thanks to a new bridge, a stabilized approach to an existing bridge, and new signs provided by John Lebate for his Eagle Scout project.

fall 2005

Two new bridges for the Rec Path are being built by Scout Spencer Tate.  The bridges will be located in the section of trail that runs parallel to Wesley Driver.

Your Project Here

Most needed trail projects:

A bike-friendly bridge for the Rec Path between Crab Apple Circle and the powerlines.

A replacement bike-friendly bridge for Turkey Trot Trail near Willoughby Road.

Contact the Trails Committee to arrange a project.

Have I missed anyone?  Let me know!  I'd also like to know the names of any businesses that donated materials and I'll put a link to their website.  Send me an email to with something like "Shelton Trails" in the subject line so I don't delete it.
